Remembering Willie

Willie was adopted from the shelter where Pam has been volunteering for 11 years. He had been staked outside and was brought to the shelter because he “barked too much”. He was a high energy boy who loved nothing better than running full speed on the beach. He loved swimming, hiking, playing with other dogs and was the best snuggler ever. He was diagnosed with severe dilated cardiomyopathy in 2022. Later it was discovered that he had a malignant anal gland tumor. Surgery was not possible due to his heart condition. He was taking 4 heart medications and a chemotherapy drug. Thankfully, there were no side effects from the medications and for a year he showed no signs of illness. He wasn’t allowed to run due to his heart but he loved going to his favorite store to get a piece of cheese. Sometimes the owner would wrap up a piece of bacon to go with it. If I’d forget to get him the cheese, the look he gave me was priceless! I’d go back for the cheese. Willie took care of me when we were taking care of my 98 year old father. I would become anxious and Willie would lie down next to me to calm me. Willie was my “heart” dog. We were completely devoted to one another.
