Remembering Minnie

We got Minnie when she was a puppy from an animal shelter on Groundhog Day in 2013. We named her Minnie because of our home state of Minnesota and because she had huge paws for a puppy, so we thought she would be big and it would be fun to name her that. She loved playing fetch, especially in the water, but her favorite game was to catch frisbees in the air. Just before she turned eleven, she developed a small low-grade mast cell tumor on her chest, which was surgically removed. Then about 6 months after that she had an attack of sorts where her whole right forelimb swelled up and a new mast cell tumor literally grew overnight over her right shoulder. We tried an oral chemotherapy called toceranib for about 3 weeks and things seemed to be getting better at first, but it was probably just the steroids that she was also on that made her seem better. We then decided to try vinblastine intravenous chemotherapy; however, by that time, the skin around the tumor ulcerated and we made the decision to discontinue treatment and let her go. She went very peacefully in our presence on October 11, 2024. She was a kind sole and a great companion. She was loved and will be missed.
