PLENARY SESSION DESCRIPTION:  This 90-minute plenary session presented by Mr. James Rea of the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science is open to all conference attendees and is presented by the Alda Center for Communicating Science.  This workshop is designed to give you an introduction to the Alda Method and uses simple improvisational theater exercises and message-design techniques that will help you explore and experience effective communication strategies. During the program, participants will build fundamental skills in active listening, designed to help a researcher better understand their audience. Participants will begin to develop skills and strategies that help to improve audience engagement and understanding.

Note:  The breakout portion of this program is for those who have paid the additional $30 fee to attend

BREAKOUT DESCRIPTION:  The Plenary Extension combines the plenary experience with a more intimate, intensive experience and is limited to 32 people. This breakout session gives the participants a second, 90-minute session in which to more deeply explore and experiment with the strategies presented during the plenary.

During this session, participants will have expanded opportunities to practice with peers and receive feedback about how they craft and present information and concepts. Through improvisational theater exercises, participants will begin to reflect on their own communication styles and learn how to read and respond to an audience. By working with others and workshop facilitators, participants will think about and practice using different communication strategies to engage their audiences, no matter who they are.
